Toyota and Woven Planet Have Developed a New Prototype of a Portable Hydrogen Cartridge – Business Wire

Tokyo – (work wire) – TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (“Toyota”) and its subsidiary Woven Planet Holdings, Inc. (“Woven Planet”) has developed a working prototype of its portable hydrogen cartridge. This cartridge design will facilitate the everyday transportation and supply of hydrogen power to power a wide range of everyday applications both indoors and outdoors. Toyota and Woven Planet will conduct proof-of-concept (“PoC”) trials at various venues, including Woven City, a human-centered future smart city currently being built in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture.

Toyota and Woven Planet are studying a number of viable pathways for carbon neutralization and consider hydrogen a promising solution. Hydrogen has great advantages. Zero carbon dioxide(Carbon Dioxide)It is emitted when hydrogen is used. Moreover, when hydrogen is produced using renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, geothermal and biomass, carbon dioxide emissions during the production process are also reduced. Hydrogen can be used to generate electricity in fuel cell systems and can also be used as a fuel for combustion.

Together with ENEOS, Toyota and Woven Planet are building a comprehensive hydrogen-based supply chain aimed at accelerating and simplifying production, transportation and everyday use. These experiences will focus on meeting the energy needs of Woven City residents and those who live in the surrounding communities.

Benefits of using hydrogen cartridges

  • Portable, affordable and convenient energy makes it possible to bring hydrogen to the places where people live, work and play without the use of tubes

    • Prototype Dimensions: 400 mm (16 in) in length x 180 mm (7 in) in diameter

    • Target weight: 5 kg (11 lbs)

  • Interchangeable for easy replacement and quick recharge

  • Size flexibility allows for a variety of daily use applications* 2

  • Small infrastructure can meet the energy needs of remote, non-electrified areas and can be quickly dispatched in the event of a disaster

Next steps for hydrogen cartridge

Today most hydrogen is produced from fossil fuels and is used for industrial purposes such as fertilizer production and petroleum refining. To use hydrogen as an energy source in our homes and everyday lives, technology must meet various safety standards and be modified to suit new environments. In the future, we expect hydrogen to be generated with very low carbon emissions and used in a variety of applications. The Japanese government is working on a range of studies to promote the early safe adoption of hydrogen, and Toyota and its business partners are happy to offer cooperation and support.

Our goal is to help hydrogen become commonplace by making this clean form of energy safe, convenient and affordable. By creating the core supply chain, we hope to facilitate the flow of more hydrogen and fuel more applications. Woven City will explore and test a range of energy applications using hydrogen cartridges including mobility, household applications, and many more future possibilities we have not yet imagined. Together with inventors and those who live in and around the Woven City, we will continue to enhance mobility over time through the continued development of more practical applications for hydrogen cartridges. In future Woven City shows, we will continue to improve the hydrogen cartridge itself, making it increasingly easy to use and improving energy density.

The ultimate goal of this project is to achieve a carbon-neutral society where everyone has access to clean energy, first in Japan and then around the world. Toyota and Woven Planet aim to develop best practices for integrating clean hydrogen energy into everyday life by conducting human-centered demonstrations in and around Woven City. These real-life experiences will help us learn the best way to convert hydrogen into a familiar, well-used and beloved form of energy.

The prototype of the portable hydrogen cartridge will be shown in the Super Taikyu Series 2022 Round 2 at Fuji SpeedWay from June 3-5, 2022.* 3. Our presentation is geared towards teaching people how hydrogen energy works and helping them to imagine the myriad ways in which hydrogen can become a useful part of their daily lives.

*1 Specifications and design are subject to change. Target weight for a full tank (5 kg) does not include valve and guard. Multiple types of vessels will be considered in the future based on further applied research over time.

*2 When electricity is generated by a typical FC system, a hydrogen cartridge is assumed to generate enough electricity to run a typical household microwave for approximately 3-4 hours (based on the assumption of future redundancy use, a high pressure hydrogen tank with an electricity output of approximately 3.3 kWh / lonliness).

*3 Our show will be on June 4th and June 5th only.
