Rishi Sunak’s measures are a one-time payment, and the £400 covers just half of the projected average £800 energy cost increase (Sunak shifts ‘energy profit tax’ in its £15 billion cost of living package, May 26). Even those with the biggest payments only get it once. This piece of window dressing to hide the hateful and corrupt behavior of this government does nothing significant to alleviate the UK’s growing poverty. People need a much better level of guaranteed income, more work rights and security.
But we also need a radical change in taxes from income taxes to land, property, and wealth taxes. All tax evasion benefits must be closed. The facilities must be returned to public ownership or to much greater public control, and management must include employees and consumers.
There are many things that can be done to restore a greater degree of equality in the population. The dominant economic model of this government is not a natural law as the chancellor and other ministers present it. It is a human construct and can be changed through human actions so that its benefits are equitably distributed.
The government took a great idea and implemented it poorly. The oil and gas industry gets away with the vast majority of its excess profits from rising energy prices, while taxpayers cover two-thirds of Rishi Sunak’s energy subsidies to help pay the bills.
Instead of lowering the cost of future bills by expanding cheap renewables faster and insulating homes, the government is giving a huge tax credit to oil and gas producers to invest in fossil fuels. In what world does it make sense to expand the production of high-cost, life-threatening fuels on our planet, while doing nothing extra to get more cheap green stuff?
Green Party, House of Lords
Multiple homeowners will benefit from £400 in both primary and secondary homes. Where there are about 500,000 second homes in the UKThat’s almost an additional £200m that could be used more equitably. Again, we were told that it is very difficult to be sure of second homes. As with the massive fraud that occurred during the pandemic due to the inability of governments to regulate the formation of new companies, money is being siphoned off to those who do not need it. Those who have more get more. Only the meek among us can look to inherit the earth.
It is not entirely accurate that ‘every family’ would receive £400 from the government. There are homes (including mine – one of over 350 in Northumberland alone) that don’t have electricity, so you won’t receive this help. This is despite relying on diesel for electricity (unless he’s lucky enough to have wind and solar, out of reach for most people), whose cost has nearly doubled in a year, and on oil or wood for heating, for which there is no price cap. And where the cost increases are staggering.
We face the same cost of living challenges as everyone else. These families were ignored. We are weak in every sense of the word.
The government is planning to give me £400 to cover my energy costs. Looks like I might get another £150 because I’m retired. I don’t need the payments so I will donate them to a charity that supports those who are really struggling because of this government.
