Wireless electricity can become a reality thanks to Kiwi Startup – Stuff.co.nz

Wireless electricity may sound like science fiction — but the founder of start-up Kiwi says it could one day be as popular as receiving a text message.

The technology could allow remote areas like Stewart Island to receive electricity from the mainland, and could allow a homeowner in Germany to buy electricity from New Zealand.

About 15 minutes from New Plymouth, Auckland startup Emrod, supported by New Zealand’s future energy hub Ara Ake and Powerco, has begun construction on its first offshore pilot site for wireless power transmission technology.

The electricity will be converted into an electromagnetic beam between two antennas a few hundred meters away, at a site that is expected to be operational by the end of June.

CEO and founder, Greg Kushner, said the saturation of power has been around since the days of Nikola Tesla, an inventor born in the 1850s.

“Tesla introduced it to the world, but the technology just wasn’t there. The vision was there, but not the ability to implement it.

“What has changed dramatically in this regard is the readily available computational power, and the materials we can create, build, and manipulate.”

The biggest driver of the energy saturation, he said, is current economic conditions – and a focus on the transition to sustainable energy.

Kushner said they have “a lot of interest” from around the world – including the oil and gas, mining, aerospace and government sectors.

With the recent hike in gasoline prices, there has been a rush to buy electric cars (the video was first published in March 2022).

Kushner said the current obstacle to generating renewable electricity is getting electricity from one place to another.

“For example, in Germany, most of the renewable energy is in the north and most of the demand is going south, and they need to get a rite of passage from hundreds of private landowners to put a new line in it and that could take years.

“We don’t have years, we need to get this renewable generation online now.”

Offshore wind farms – where cable across the ocean is difficult and expensive, and mining trucks – which can’t handle charging times, or the weight of batteries, were also areas where the energy beam could be used.

The technology has layers of safety, he said, including placing it up high to avoid people crossing through the crossbar, and having a “safety curtain” that would turn off the crossbar if anything crossed it.

“Then you have the nature of those things moving through the air. It’s not a high-powered laser, it can’t make a hole in things, it can’t burn things, it’s basically electromagnetic waves in the ISM range.”

“So the same things as Wi-fi and Bluetooth are the same frequencies. And if you’re happy to have your phone around, what we send through is pretty much the same.”

Kushner said transmission through the air is more efficient than wire.

He said Emrod currently achieves 95% efficiency through the air, and has figured out how to get above 99% efficiency regardless of distance.

The tricky part is converting the electricity to the beam.

“In terms of transportation, the current cutting-edge technology for electricity conversion, in general, is about 70-75%, pay 80%.”

But Kushner is confident Emrod is making a “big leap”.

“I would say, basically new power electronics, that would really take us to the next level.

“Energy radiation is the most exciting emerging trend in energy, I think, in decades really.”
